As a self-identifying “Christian,” I find myself absolutely appalled by the comments made by Pat Robertson regarding the recent earthquake in Haiti. The irony of the following video is so thick it almost makes me sick: a “non-christian” television host best known for his irreverent and fowl-languaged skewering of the news is able to assess the situation and provide helpful “biblical” comfort with much greater ease and effectiveness than those from the tradition from which I come who currently have access to the airwaves to spread their “message.”
Was it not enough to call 9-11 a punishment from God on a nation for it’s acceptance of homosexuals and abortion? Did no one explain that it was not helpful to label hurricane Katrina a judgment from God on a sinful city? I find myself wanting to shout from the rooftops, “Those people don’t speak for me!” The problem is, they are. And I’m not sure what I can do about it.
